A note to self: Building a web application ...

... is like building a house. As an application builder I need to know what my client wants in their home; how it should look; how it should function.

Design - I need to understand the occupants. Who will live in this home? What language do they speak? I need to learn their jargon – not the other way around.

Develop - Build it! Strap on my tool belt and get my hands dirty. Usually the owner does not care how I frame a wall – nor should they. However, if they ask, be prepared to answer.

Host - I need to help them find a suitable lot to build on. A comfortable neighborhood that will handle all the parties that they plan to have.

Project Management - Assemble and oversee the necessary crew to get the job done. Also, during construction the owner may want to walk through a couple of times. Be prepared for this. And be prepared for changes!

Support - When the owner moves in there will be a punch list of items that need fixing. Address all the issues in a timely manner.

Finally, quote a price and stick to it. Remain positive and flexible. And above all, throughout the process, keep the lines of communication open and easy.
